EBL Alerting Policy
Issued byEBLEuropean Bridge League
StatusIn force
LanguageEnglish
The alerting rules at EBL championships. Conventional calls are alerted and natural ones are not. Without screens, three things are never alerted: doubles, notrump bids that suggest a balanced hand or a notrump contract, and calls at the four level or higher (except conventional calls in the first round). Like the WBF policy, it does not override national alerting rules.
Alerting at a glance
- Basic rule
- Alert conventional calls; natural calls are not alerted. Also alert calls with special meanings, non-forcing jump shifts and non-forcing new-suit responses by an unpassed hand.
- Announcements
- No announcements.
- Natural 1NT opening
- Not alerted when it suggests a balanced or semi-balanced hand (without screens).
- Transfers after 1NT
- Conventional — alerted.
- Doubles
- Without screens: never alerted.
- High-level calls
- Without screens: nothing at the four level or higher is alerted, except conventional calls in the first round.
- Behind screens
- The three no-alert exceptions apply only without screens; behind screens the general rule applies.
- Good to know
- Applies to EBL championships; national federations in Europe keep their own rules.
